Woman Getting An Eye Exam For IOL

At Callahan Eye Clinic, we believe everyone deserves crystal clear vision. As a leading optometrist serving the greater Birmingham area, we're proud to provide a wide range of eye care treatments to help our patients achieve and maintain perfect vision over the course of a lifetime. If you suffer from cataracts, we can treat the problem and restore your vision with cataract surgery – and if you'd like to do away with glasses and contacts for good, we may be able to facilitate complete vision through a premium intraocular lens (IOL).

Types of Premium Intraocular Cataract Lenses

Premium Intraocular lenses are an excellent option for patients who want to use cataract surgery as a chance to achieve crystal clear, perfect vision, once and for all. While premium IOLs are a slightly more significant investment than standard IOLs, they come with improved performance, clearer vision, and often eliminate the need for glasses. We offer a variety of premium IOLs at our eye care clinic, including:

  • Toric Intraocular Lenses: Toric IOLs are perfect for people with astigmatism, or curvature of the cornea. Toric lenses can correct for both nearsightedness and farsightedness in addition to astigmatism, preventing the need for glasses after surgery.
  • Aspheric Intraocular Lenses: Standard IOLs are designed to be completely spherical, but this can cause vision issues in low-light conditions. Aspheric IOLs, on the other hand, are designed with a varying curvature that isn't a perfect sphere. This mimics the curvature of the natural lens of the eye to provide sharper vision, especially in low light.
  • Accommodating Intraocular Lenses: Accommodating IOLs expand the range of vision by using an aspheric design and flexible "haptics," which are the supporting structures that hold the lens in place inside the eye. This allows the lens to move within the eye in the same way a natural lens would, increasing the ability of the eye to focus naturally and often eliminating the need for glasses.
  • Multifocal Intraocular Lenses: Multifocal IOLs provide varying levels of magnification at different points in the lens, which expands the range of clear vision. This allows you to see objects at all distances clearly and limits your need for reading glasses. However, multifocal IOLs can cause glare or slightly blurred vision, so it's best to talk with your doctor to see if multifocals are right for you.
  • Monovision: Another option for clear vision at all distances is monovision, which involves placing a different type of lens in each eye – one for nearsightedness and one for farsightedness. This option is cost-effective and provides clear vision at varying distances, but you should only consider this if you're used to wearing different powered contact lenses in each eye and don't experience discomfort when doing so.
