What Is LASIK Laser Eye Surgery?

LASIK surgery is a treatment that corrects refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. While typically, patients with these conditions would need to wear glasses or contacts to see well, this surgery will reshape the cornea, making clear vision possible without the need for glasses or contacts. While LASIK surgery can’t be used for cataracts, it can be performed after cataract surgery.

How Does LASIK Work?

LASIK laser eye surgery is a quick, safe, and painless procedure that follows these steps:

  • First, numbing eye drops will be administered to alleviate discomfort to the eye. This procedure only requires topical anesthetic drops and no stitches are needed to heal.
  • Your eye will be positioned underneath the laser and a lid speculum will be used to keep your eyelid open.
  • With the usage of either a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser, a thin semi-circular flap will be created in the cornea on the eye’s surface.
  • Your doctor will then use the excimer laser to sculpt the desired prescription by using an ultraviolet beam of light to reshape the cornea.
  • After the laser reshapes the cornea, the flap will be closed and it will seal within minutes.
  • The same process will be performed on the other eye, if necessary.

Is LASIK Surgery Right for You?

While not everyone is a candidate for LASIK surgery, advancements in vision correction technology are now allowing more people than ever to benefit from LASIK. Approximately 85 percent of all patients will be good candidates for LASIK. A good candidate for LASIK:

  • Is at least 18 years of age.
  • Doesn’t have cataracts or any other eye-related issues.
  • Has had a stable eye prescription for at least a year.

  • Wants to reduce his or her dependency on glasses or contacts.
