Callahan, MD is the leading cataract surgeon in Birmingham, AL.

About the Procedure

Cataracts form when the natural proteins in the lens of the eye begin to break down. As they break down, they deposit on the lens and cause the clouding that you see in your vision. During cataract surgery, the eye’s natural cloudy lens is removed by an ultrasonic probe and replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL). Since being approved by the FDA in 1981, IOLs have offered an efficient alternative for cataract patients. Before the use of IOLs, cataract patients had to wear very thick eyeglasses or special contact lenses in order to see once the natural lenses were removed. Following cataract surgery, many patients now need only reading glasses to read and can see clearly in the distance.

ORATM Assisted Cataract Surgery

ORA SystemBecause the accuracy of measuring you for an IOL can depend on the type of cataract you have or your post-refractive surgery status (RK or LASIK), we offer the latest technology to ensure you are receiving a lens that best suits your eye. The ORA System™with VerifEye+ technology is a new device that measures your eye during the moment of your cataract surgery. Once your cataract is removed, the physician will use ORA™ to measure the eye and choose which lens to use and place in the eye. Without the cataract in the way, the physician is able to take the most accurate measurement. The ORA System is especially beneficial for the following situations:

  • Difficult or Mature Cataracts
  • Post-RK or Post-LASIK Patients
