Eye Care Tips

When it comes to ophthalmology, Callahan Eye Clinic is proud to be a leading provider in and around Birmingham, AL. We’re equipped with state-of-the-art technology designed to handle a number of eye conditions such as cataracts, diabetes, and glaucoma.  However, sometimes the best way to combat any eye illness is to prevent it in the first place. There are several different ways you can keep your eyes from developing any problems, which include the following:

Diet

Much like any other organ in your body, your eyes require nutrients to function at their highest capacity. Proper eye care requires getting a sufficient amount of Vitamin A, antioxidants, and minerals like zinc in your diet. When your diet lacks these nutrients, you may be at risk for macular degeneration or xeropthalmia, a condition that can lead to blindness.

Safetywear

A countless amount of eye injuries occur every year because people don’t properly protect their eyes. You’ll want to make sure to protect your eyes when working with power tools, operating machinery, playing sports, or doing yard work. It’s also important to know that eyeglasses won’t adequately protect your eyes against debris or chemicals; you’ll want to use safety glasses, safety goggles, or a face shield.

Ultraviolet Exposure

One of the most common causes of cataracts and macular degeneration is exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends people to protect themselves from UV exposure whenever they’ll be in the sunlight long enough to tan. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat or sunglasses are simple and cost-effective ways to limit your exposure to UV rays.

Eye Strain

While experts say that straining your eyes can’t actually do any permanent harm, it can lead to uncomfortable side effects such as red or watery eyes. The best remedy for this is just to rest your eyes for a while. A few helpful ways to avoid eye strain altogether include wearing your prescription glasses or contacts, getting a more accurate prescription for your eyewear, or increasing your reading light.
