Callahan Eye Clinic is proud to be your choice when you’re looking for an eye clinic in and around Birmingham, AL. As your trusted Birmingham optometrist, we’re glad to help you out with any eye problems you may have. One common worry that patients sometimes have is about taking care of their eyeglasses. To alleviate these concerns, we’ve provided a list of steps for you in order to best take care of your eyeglasses.

Clean Your Glasses Everyday

It’s common for dust, grease, and other particles to build up on your glasses over time. This is why it’s a good idea to clean them once a day to make sure they’re looking good and giving you the clearest vision. When you clean your glasses, you should also inspect them and make sure that there aren’t any problems such as a loose screw or a crooked alignment.

Use Water and a Soft Cloth to Clean Your Glasses

One of the best and simplest ways to clean your glasses is by using water and a soft cloth. If you’re able to, also using a small amount of dish soap is the optimal method. Rinse your glasses with warm water (don’t use hot water) and a bit of soap, then gently clean them with a soft clean cloth. If you don’t have a soft cloth, you can also let them air dry.

Use a Case for Your Eyeglasses

When you’re not using your glasses, it’s best to keep them in an eyeglasses case. A case is a perfect investment for someone with glasses; it can protect your glasses in a variety of ways. Most notably, it will prevent them from getting caked with dust and other particles and it will also keep your glasses from getting crushed if something (or someone) was to accidentally fall on it.

Make Sure Your Hands Are Clean

If you’re handling your glasses, make sure that they’re clean. Glasses already attract plenty of dirt and dust, so it’s best not to intensify that problem. Wash your hands before removing them, putting them on, or adjusting them.

Handle Your Glasses with Two Hands

When you take your glasses off or put them on, it can sometimes be simpler or more convenient to just use one hand. However, when you remove them with just one hand, you can sometimes accidentally bend them a little and cause them to be crooked. Using two hands when putting on or removing your glasses will strongly decrease the likelihood of bending them or making them misadjusted.

Don’t Try to Adjust Your Glasses Yourself

If your glasses don’t seem to be fitting properly or they happen to be crooked, don’t try to fix them by yourself. This will likely only make the problem worse. Please feel free to come into our eye clinic and have one of our opticians adjust your eyeglasses for you.

Ask for Scratch-Resistant Coating

If you’re worried about the durability of your glasses and the possibility of scratches, you can ask about a scratch-resistant coating. By adding this protective coating, you can extend the quality and life of your glasses.
