Do Carrots Really Help Your Eyesight?

When most people want to improve their eyesight, they generally go to their eye doctor. As your trusted Birmingham, AL eye doctor, we at Callahan Eye Clinic are glad to provide the eye care and treatments necessary to help you achieve good eyesight. However, there are also some people who believe that all you have to do is eat the proper foods in order to improve your eyesight. Having said that, it shouldn’t be a surprise that one of the most common questions that we get is whether carrots really help your eyesight.

Myth or Fact: Carrots Help Your Eyesight

Fact: carrots are beneficial for good eyesight because they contain two important nutrients: vitamin A and lutein. Vitamin A is an especially important nutrient for good vision. Lack of vitamin A is actually the leading cause of blindness around the world and not getting enough of this vitamin can also lead to macular degeneration and the development of cataracts. Lutein is a vital antioxidant that will help protect the retinas and decrease the risk of developing macular degeneration. So while carrots really do help your eyesight somewhat and will help fend off certain eye diseases, they also don’t have the magical ability to give you 20/20 vision. It’s still important to regularly see your eye doctor to make sure that your eyes are in their optimal condition.

Other Foods That Help Provide Good Eyesight

Carrots aren’t the only food that will help your eyesight; there are plenty of other foods that are good for your eyes as well. These foods include:

  • Leafy greens

  • Citrus fruits

  • Berries

  • Eggs

  • Salmon

  • Almonds

  • Milk

  • Cheese

  • Any food that’s high in vitamin A
